More About Adult Orthodontics

In the past, orthodontic treatment was considered only for teenagers; however, 1 in 5 new orthodontic patients are over the age of 21, according to statistics provided by the Canadian Association of Orthodontists. The increasing numbers of adult patients who are choosing to undergo orthodontic treatment reflects their appreciation of the importance of maintaining optimum dental health. Many adults also wish to transform their smiles to help improve their self-image and appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are many reasons why adults will consider orthodontic treatments, including: a desire for a healthier mouth and more confident smile; to reduce the pressure or abnormal jaw pain caused by crooked teeth; a bad bite or malocclusion which has caused the teeth to incorrectly fit together; or teeth that are overly crowded, separated, causing gum disease, or teeth that are causing tooth decay.

Many adults have been discouraged from seeking orthodontic treatments due to the thought of wearing metal braces. Nowadays, there are numerous orthodontic treatment options available, with a wider assortment of appliances and braces that are customizable and comfortable as well as esthetically pleasing. The different types of braces include: Clear ceramic braces, removable Invisalign® braces, self-ligating braces, hidden lingual braces and traditional metal braces.

The main thing to take into consideration when comparing treatments for children and adults is that in younger patients, their jawbones are still developing. Adult bones have completed their full growth process, which means that there may be the possibility of orthognathic surgery to help align the jawbones.

Other differences include: Bone loss or periodontal disease or gum loss. Adults for example, are more likely than children to experience bone loss, gum loss, or even advanced periodontal disease. Patients who have straighter teeth are far less prone to gum disease.

Another popular reason for some to pursue treatments is that as a teenager they did not complete their treatments. Many adults have received some orthodontic treatments as a teenager, but for a variety of reasons, did not complete their treatments. They are now choosing to complete orthodontic treatments as an adult in order to achieve the smile that they have always dreamed of.

Yet another reason why some adults pursue orthodontic treatment is due to missing or worn teeth in adulthood. Gradually over time, some teeth may shift or become worn down, causing them to drift into undesirable positions that can only be remedied with orthodontic care. When there are missing teeth, it can cause other teeth to tilt or shift, creating the possibility of gum disease or a bad bite.

Our practice is fully aware that adults have much different needs than children and require different levels of attention and care. We will work closely with you to help ensure that you receive the best treatment options. It is very important to our team that your needs are met with respect and understanding.

If your mouth goes untreated, problems could get worse. If you wait too long to undergo needed orthodontic treatment, you may create long-term health issues that could cost you more money down the road. Healthy teeth are straight teeth and teeth that are aligned correctly are far easier to maintain with daily flossing and brushing. Better daily maintenance may also prevent further health issues. Orthodontic treatment can help to boost your overall appearance and self-confidence, which allows you a better quality of life. You will have the freedom to smile without holding back.
